Sureties

What is a surety?

A surety is a legal guarantor; who declares that they trust the person seeking bail to keep to the court's conditions of release from immigration detention. If he or she absconds, the surety's money (the ‘recognizance') will be called in by the authorities.

Do I have to be rich to be a surety?

The standard amount agreed in recognizance usually runs from £200 to £500. Many volunteers are working professionals or retired people. Some were themselves refugees, others are students or unemployed.

What else do sureties do?
