scottish climate change bill
The Scottish Government has consulted with groups from non-governmental organisations, business and industry, the public sector and academic/research on proposals for a Scottish Climate Change Bill. The consultation ended on 23 April 2008 and an analysis of the consultation will be published in early Summer 2008. The Scottish Government hopes to introduce a draft Scottish Climate Change Bill to Parliament before the end of 2008.
While it is working with the UK Government on the UK Climate Change Bill, as well as with the devolved administrations in Wales and Northern Ireland, the intention is to set a target of 80%, rather than the UK's 60%, for the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions by 2050. This is because Scotland's emissions, and the potential to reduce them, are different from the rest of the UK - there is huge potential in renewable energy such as marine and wind energy, for instance.
Details of the consultation are on the Scottish Government website
