Free Ebooks

We have released three ebooks relating to the commemoration of the World War I centenary, including 2 new books: We Will Remember by Keith Clements looks at how the churches in Britain responded to the First World War. Out of the Depths from Andrew Barr, with the Joint Liturgical Group of Great Britain, explores how the churches respond to occasions of public grief.

To correspond with the commemoration we have also produced an ebook version of Beyond Our Tears link to external website. This is a collection of prayers, readings, poems and hymns which draw on the experience of those who can reflect on war and reconciliation and other tragic events.

All three books can be downloaded for free here in .mobi (Kindle) and .epub (Apple iBooks) format. The .mobi files can be read on Kindle devices or using free Kindle software on Apple link to external website and Android link to external website tablets and phones, plus PCs link to external website and Apple Macs link to external website. The .epub files can be read on Apple iPhones, iPads and Macs using iBooks, and some other ebook readers, for example from Sony.

Bible Society

The Bible and World War 1 web page explains how the Bible was central to British culture at the time of World War I. The Bible Society has also produced Hear My Cry an illustrated collection of psalms, poems and personal stories to aid reflection about the War.

The Church of England has produced a website looking at the church in World War I.

It features events, stories, history and a set of liturgical resources for use at services commemorating the anniversary of World War One. These include a suggested liturgy for a vigil service produced by Westminster Abbey.

HOPE

HOPE and its partners have prepared resources to help churches to mark the centenary of World War I as part of its year of mission to local communities during 2014.

For Christmas 2014, HOPE is preparing Silent Night carol service resources  with a specially-written version of Silent Night.

Quakers in Britain

Quakers in Britain have produced a free resource pack Witnessing for Peace on the centenary of WWI, telling the stories of the early stages of the war from a Quaker perspective. This is the beginning of a four-year project for Quakers in Britain with plans to tell the untold stories of those who refused to fight in WWI.
