economic crisis
The economic crisis and global recession are now rarely far from most people's minds and its effects are being felt more and more widely. The churches are now reflecting theologically on the underlying causes of the crisis as well as responding practically to its effects. Read here what they are saying and doing about such issues as:
- Causes of the recession, Christian moral ethics in business and the freedom to make a fair profit.
- How churches are responding to increasing poverty and debt.
- Their thinking regarding a future which has more of a value base and could be more equitable and more sustainable.
In January 2009, Churches Together in Britain and Ireland organised a day conference The Economic Crisis: Towards Sustainable Economies and Livelihoods. This brought together over 100 church representatives who reflected theologically on the root causes of the economic crisis and the response of the churches in terms of their prophetic, pastoral and partnership roles and responsibilities. The talks are available as downloads.
